Check out his review of his alma mater: VT: Describe the campus setting and transportation options.How urban or safe is the campus?Are there buses or do you need a car/bike? Justin: New Orleans has a strong streetcar / bus system. A car is not essential, but if you want to move around quickly, it definitely helps. Otherwise, if you are not in a huge rush, the streetcar will get you from uptown to the downtown/French Quarter area easily. VT: How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Justin: The professors at Tulane are of the highest caliber. All the professors I had were knowledgeable in their subject matter, willing to meet to discuss points of difficulty, kind, and friendly. They have their PhDs, so they are experts in their subject matter. Tulane Professors are definitely worthy of respect. VT: How would you describe the dorm life rooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Justin: Tulanes location is great directly across the street from Audubon Park in Uptown New Orleans. Dorm life offers a wide array of options from single rooms with nothing but a desk, a window, a twin bed and some shelves, to the Willow Dormitory, a complex living community of four-room suites with Wi-Fi connections and the most modern facilities. Living on campus for one year is highly recommended so you can meet your core group of friends, but then many people rent apartments / rooms in houses after freshman year. As for dining options, Bruff Commons has food that is decent, but not great. There is a wide variety, but a lot of it is not that healthy. Obviously, New Orleans is a major city, so there is all the variety that you would find in New York, Chicago, or Boston. You can order to your dorm room/home or head out for pick-up. Personally, I recommend Caf Ninos on South Carrolton Avenue, or the Camilla Grille on the same street. In fact, South Carrollton has a lot of terrific places and it is within a 10-minute walk from campus. In terms of socialization opportunities on campus you will never be without a chance to meet your fellow students. Tulane is a very social campus with much opportunity for social events, get-togethers, dinners, clubs, etc. Just put yourself out there and you will be sure to fall in with your group. VT: Which majors/programs are best represented and supported?What did you study and why? Did the university do a good job supporting your particular area of study? Justin: A.B. Freeman School of Business perhaps boasts the largest cadre of majors at Tulane. The Law School is well known for its contribution to the field as is the Medical School. I studied Spanish and Philosophy. Yes, Tulane did a wonderful job supporting my field of study. Out of Tulane, I was able to get a job as a Spanish teacher, get a Masters Degree from the #3 ranked Spanish Masters Program in the U.S., and then go on to study at Vanderbilt Universitys #1 world-wide ranked PhD program. I was accepted along with six other students in 2007, so I would say that Tulane, as the start of the journey, did more than enough to prepare me. VT: How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Justin: Not difficult at all. Your hall-mates will socialize with you. Greek life is there, but it is not essential to have a great group of friends. Some may even say that the additional cost of fraternity/sorority dues is not worth it. I joined a fraternity, but it did not take on a central role in my social life. In fact, I ended up hanging out with people from other fraternities and sticking close to the core group of friends I made freshman year. VT: How helpful is the Career Centerand other student support services?Do many reputable companies recruit on campus? Justin: The Career Center is great. Tulane Alumni Services is great. All of them are excellent resources for helping you get started on the career path. Yes, there are several career fairs each year. Tulane is among our nations best universities, so you can bet that the top companies set up a booth at the Career Fairs. VT: How are the various study areas such aslibraries, the student union, and dorm lounges? Are they over-crowded, easily available, spacious? Justin: The library is readily available to all students. It was never over-crowded. The student union is terrific. There are coffee shops, food, an information desk, and a book store there as well as multiple tables all over the place to study, socialize, eat, have a coffee, etc. VT: Describe the surrounding town. What kinds of outside establishments / things to do are there that make it fun, boring, or somewhere in between?To what extent do students go to the downtown area of the city versus staying near campus? Justin: Well, Tulane is in New Orleans, LA. There is fun to be had all over. If bars are your thing, there are fancy places and dives all over. If you like night clubs, then maybe the French Quarter is for you. If you want to spend time checking out historical sites, there is no shortage at all as New Orleans has a culturally rich heritage. VT: How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Justin: When I was there from 1997-2001, there were approximately 7,000 undergraduate students and 4,000 graduate students. The typical class size was 15-20. I was pleased with this. VT: Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Justin: Hands down Professor Brumfelds Russian Art and Architecture class. I needed it for an elective. The man spoke the way great writers write. I have only met one other teacher with his eloquence and delivery. He should write speeches for Presidents. He had the entire class of seniors completely captivated with his descriptions of the iconic art of the 11th-13th century Russia. I got a B on the final exam and was so proud of myself. There was so much information to cover. People studied for it for weeks together. 5 Random Items to Help You Study There are many elements to planning a study session. First and foremost, you determine the location where this will be taking place. Next, youll probably go to necessary measures to eliminate obvious distractions. At that point, its just you, your study material, and your study environment. But is that always enough? It is very common to still find yourself at a stalemate with how to get motivated in the process. Even with all the right surroundings, you may find yourself bored and sluggish, leaving you on a road to nowhere in your study journey. Not knowing what else to do, students often just accept this fate and endure the studying hours that end up stretched out far longer than they should have been. You may also want to check out these tips on how to avoid study distractions. Thankfully, this is something you can control. It is very possible that you will gather up the determination needed to change your attitude and get past the dullness of the situation on your own. However, if you still find yourself feeling weak and moving slowly, you may want to consider the addition of a few random items that could brighten up your study session. New Pens: While this may seem meaningless, a change in pens could actually improve your mood toward studying. Especially if you are writing, lyrics will often get in the way and slow you down. That is why instrumental music is worth looking into. You can still have the comfort of some catchy background noise, but without the audible words that mess with your mind. Classical is a go-to genre for this, but if that doesnt fit your taste, there are plenty of other wordless songs out there in every genre. They may not be prominent in pop culture and therefore off your radar, but with a little exploration, you should be able to find something you like or at the very least, something that inspires you intellectually. Computer Screen Cleaner: If youre using the computer, youd be surprised at how dusty and dirty your screen has probably gotten over time. Youre probably used to its current state and think you are not bothered by it, but that is only because you havent been reminded of anything better. Take a look at your brightness settings as well and figure out if the light from the screen is bothering you at all. Different Colored Post-it Notes: If the wheels in your head are really turning as you go along, you are going to come up with various thoughts that youll need to document. Getting them down in your notes is one thing, but sometimes we get ideas that arent quite ready for the formal study guide we are making and need some development. Or perhaps you have just remembered something you need to acquire or do later on to aid your study process. Being able to jot down such thoughts on post-it notes is extremely convenient; youll be happy you provided yourself with them. Buying them in different colors is certainly optional, but it is encouraged since it is typically more aesthetically pleasing and can allow you to organize your thoughts in a more systematic way by categorizing things. It keeps things fun, and of course, you can place these little reminders wherever youd like due to their handy stickiness. Coffee/Water/Beverage of Your Choice: Caffeine is one study aid that many people depend on, but even just having a bottle of water or juice can be helpful. You’ll still need teaching skills if you want to become a good teacher and provide language instruction outside a traditional classroom.  There are language schools that don’t require their teachers to have a PGCE, for example. That said, you do need to be able to prove your teaching skills and language skills to work in one.On the other hand, if you want to teach the Russian language in primary schools, secondary schools, or universities, you’ll need some formal qualifications.  In theory, you can become a teacher without a Russian degree. This doesn't necessarily need to be a qualification for teachers but you will need to have a good understanding of teaching methods andWhat to Expect on the PGCEThe PGCE is about learning how to teach, not learning about what you’re going to teach. Of course, there’s a difference between teaching languages and teaching sciences. However, the PGCE is designed to make you an educator and focuses on methodology and pedagogy rather than the subject you teach.Becoming a Russian teacher will include a lot of studying. (Source: StockSnap)Just being able to speak Russian won’t be enough to teach it to secondary school students.  You’ll need to complete a PGCE, a demanding qualification tha t aims to prepare teachers for teaching in secondary school classrooms.  Since Russian isn’t a commonly taught language, you’ll probably need to consider another foreign language.You can’t just walk onto a PGCE course so you’ll have to prepare your application. This is where your other foreign languages will come in handy.  On the course, you’ll learn different teaching approaches and how to use them to effectively teach different students.Since the PGCE is a postgraduate qualification, it’s the equivalent to a master’s degree.  After you’ve got your PGCE, you’ll become a newly qualified teacher (NQT).  At this stage, you’ll start the induction programme.Where Can You Teach Russian?After spending time in Russia, would you like to teach the language?But where can you do it?There are Russian teachers everywhere and plenty of places where you can teach Russian. Esta semana conversei com Brad Burgess, um dos professores nativos da LOI English. Embora seja do Canadá, Brad vive atualmente em Tóquio, no Japão, tendo vivido anteriormente em New York City, EUA.Brad contou que o seu interesse por ensinar Inglês veio da sua vontade de conhecer pessoas de diferentes países, ter contato com diferentes culturas e viajar, sendo que a forma mais fácil que encontrou para poder realizar esses seus sonhos foi exatamente ensinar Inglês. Além disso, Brad disse que se diverte muito ensinando, que gosta da variedade de personalidades com as quais lida diariamente e que isso faz com que o seu trabalho como professor nunca seja enfadonho.Segundo ele, a maior parte dos seus alunos é do Brasil e, por norma, têm níveis de Inglês que variam entre o intermediário e o avançado.  Questionei Brad sobre a pro veniência dos alunos brasileiros que costuma ter, de acordo com as estimativas do professor, cerca de 90% dos brasileiros a quem deu aulas é de São Paulo e buscam melhorar os seus conhecimentos de Inglês para negócios.Por causa dessa grande procura, por parte dos alunos, para a aprimoração do Inglês de forma a conseguirem uma evolução na sua carreira, perguntei se a especialidade de Brad era essa, mas, afinal, não é. Brad disse que o ensino do Inglês é a sua especialidade. Porém, normalmente, é procurado por pessoas que pretendem ter aulas de Inglês para negócios ou que vêm na sua experiência como programador e produtor musical uma mais valia para melhorar os seus conhecimentos de Inglês nessas áreas em específico.Tal como fiz com os outros professores da LOI English com quem falei, perguntei ao Brad quais eram as maiores dificuldades dos brasileiros que estudam Inglês. How to Study - Easy Homework Exam Tips BobbiM Sep 14, 2015 Learning how to study is a process and takes some time to figure out.  Once you understand how and when you study best, youll be amazed at how much better you do in school as being able to spend less time studying because youve actually got a system and setup in place that works. An example of this is my son He started at his school in middle school.  He was a decent student at his prior school and he applied himself in the exact same way he had previously.  Well, his grades were in the low C range.  I was not happy!  He then started to learn  not only his subject matter but HOW to STUDY.  And that has made all the difference in the world!  What used to be a 2-4 hours p-a-i-n-f-u-l process is now down to 1-2 hours depending upon the time of year.  No moans, groans and delay tactics.  Oh, and the results?  Well after learning the best way to study and how to study that works for him, hes made Honor Roll.  I dont know about your child but for me, thats definitely a marked improvement and a success story!
